Economy of Scales: Can We Feed the World Without Wrecking the Oceans?
Each day, 20,000 people die of causes related to hunger and extreme poverty, and more than a billion people suffer from chronic food insecurity. In 1970, only about 4% of the world's seafood came from fish farms. Today that number is 31% and by 2030, according to United Nations' estimates, less than half of the fish humans consume will come from wild stocks. Marine aquaculture is expanding at an extremely rapid pace. Panelists from law, economics, and engineering will explore the environmental risks of marine aquaculture, strategies for "greening" fish farming, the effects of waste from fish farming on the surrounding ecosystems, and California's leading role in dealing with tough policy questions and setting an agenda that leads the nation in tackling these issues.
