Race and Incarceration Discussion

Details

February 4, 2010 from 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Location: Stanford Law School, Room 290.

Why are African Americans 50% of those who are incarcerated even though they are 12% of the U.S. population? What happens to those people in prison? What happens when they get out?

This panel features 4 of the most insightful speakers you will ever hear address these questions. They will examine the causes and consequences of racial disparities in imprisonment from three different vantage points.

Professor Steven Raphael from Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy will discuss how criminal justice policy relates to racial disparities in imprisonment. Filmmaker Tamara Perkins will discuss a documentary she is creating which tells the stories of black men in San Quentin State Prison. East Palo Alto Police Chief Ronald Davis will discuss a re-entry program he has developed in collaboration with Free At Last in East Palo Alto. Stanford Law School’s Joan Petersilia, co-director of Stanford Criminal Justice Center, will also contribute.
