Veterans in the Criminal Justice System

This seminar will take a research and policy approach to examining the experience of veterans in the criminal justice system, including identifying the nature and demographics of the population; the unique challenges they face while incarcerated and when returning home from prison/jail; and promising approaches to addressing their involvement in the criminal justice system such as veteran treatment courts. The course will likely include developing a comprehensive literature review, organizing a convening of national experts on the topic and developing a white paper for local and state policymakers to better serve this population. The outcome of the course may lead to a sustained direct service or policy initiative for Stanford Law School to host.
