Biography

Considered a pioneer in the emerging field of legal informatics, Joshua Walker is the Chairman and Co–Founder of Lex Machina, Inc. (lexmachina.com). He has been building legal data collections for over 18 years, frequently under adverse/novel conditions. In Kigali, Rwanda, he was part of a U.S. team that helped successfully prosecute the orchestrators of the Rwandan genocide, including the former President of Rwanda—a historic first. During law school, he coordinated advanced antitrust research with Argonne National Lab. Following graduation, he came to Silicon Valley and assisted major technology companies with complex M&A and IP litigation problems (including a tiny start–up called, at the time, "TheFacebook.com"), working at Skadden Arps and, later, Orrick Herrington.

During this time, he co–founded CodeX: The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics, the first law and computer science lab in the United States, and co–taught the Stanford Intellectual Property Exchange, an interdisciplinary workshop. As Executive Director of the Stanford IP Litigation Clearinghouse, Walker architected the largest and most relied upon U.S. patent litigation data system, ultimately engaging the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. He then lead the successful commercialization and spin–off of this program from Stanford. Published in both the legal academic and legal informatics community, he is regularly relied upon by global media on IP litigation issues. He has also supported the U.S. judiciary and the White House Office Science and Technology Policy with patent litigation data; and helped myriad technology companies.

He received his A.B. degree in Special Concentrations, magna cum laude, from Harvard College in 1995 and his J.D. from The University of Chicago Law School in 2002, where he was a Cornerstone Scholar.
