The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is a medical, political and legal instrument wielding considerable influence on culture and health. The DSM-V is the newest edition of that text being wrought right now, and scheduled for arrival in 2012. Since its inception, and like the editions that preceded it, the development of the DSM-V has been mired in controversy. The DSM-V work group on psychosis is presently debating whether to create a new category in the next edition of the DSM: viz., "Risk Syndrome for First Psychosis" (RSFP). Proposed criteria for RSFP have been made public and this journal club will convene to discuss potential legal, ethical and social implications from the perspective of thinkers outside of medicine.
