About the evening event: Everywhere we turn, we hear of news organizations under stress. Audiences are dwindling, profits are down, staffs are being cut. The problem isn’t that people don’t want the news – overall news consumption is at historic levels. The problem for news companies is how people are getting their news. Internet and mobile access to news is rapidly replacing the traditional print and broadcast distribution models. Paywalls on news sites like the Wall Street Journal and metering systems like that of the New York Times are only part of the story. Aggregators and search engines capture an increasing share of the total advertising revenue available to support content creation, but these intermediaries typically bear none of the costs of generating the content on which their business models rely. David Westin, the former President of ABC News, will discuss these challenges and share some observations about measures that might help content providers survive in the new age of the Internet.
