Room 285
In Room 285, Candace Chen, Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellow at OneJustice, will give a presentation on upcoming Justice Bus service trips. According to a 2010 California Commission on Access to Justice report, one-third of low-income rural Californians need legal help to access life’s most basic needs. OneJustice is California’s only organization that straddles the rural-urban divide by providing pro bono support and services across the state. The Justice Bus® Project trains and brings law students to volunteer at legal clinics in rural California. Students learn about substantive legal issues and the unique challenges of accessing legal help that many rural clients face. Under attorney supervision, law students assist clients by conducting legal intake, drafting legal documents, and providing self-help education. Clients' problems are often too complex to solve in a couple hours. Instead, the Justice Bus trip clinics serve to triage each client's most urgent legal needs and inform clients of their legal rights.
