Kristina Hathaway, co-founder of BioCurious, a biology hackerspace, will be speaking about the group and its mission of bringing biology to the masses. Biohackers believe that innovations in biology and biotechnology should be accessible, affordable and open to everybody. As part of that belief they have followed the model of computer/programmer enthusiasts of the past and built a Community Biology Lab in Sunnyvale where amateurs can learn how to “hack” biology or pursue their own lines of scientific research without the overhead of large academic or corporate lab. The goal is to provide a community biology lab and training center, with an emphasis on safety, for amateurs, inventors, entrepreneurs, citizen scientists, hobbyists, activists, students and anyone else who wants to experiment with friends in the area of biology. What are the repercussions, risks and opportunities that such an endeavor might create for society? Who is culpable for accidents; and who reaps the rewards for successes?
