Come hear author Raymond Bonner talk about his book that helped free an innocent man after twenty-seven years on death row, and thirty years in prison. Edward Lee Elmore, a semiliterate, mentally retarded black man, had been on death row for eleven years when a young attorney named Diana Holt first learned of his case. It was a textbook example of what can go wrong in the American justice system: incompetent court-appointed defense attorneys, a virulent prosecution, and both misplaced and contaminated evidence. The case was the cause of a lifetime for the spirited, hardworking lawyer, who began a long campaign to prove Elmore’s innocence. Larry Marshall, Associate Dean for Clinical Education and David & Stephanie Mills Director of the Mills Legal Clinic, will provide an introduction.
