Details

January 21, 2014 12:50pm - 2:00pm

Room 271

The Environmental Law Scholarship Series is designed to bring students and faculty together to generate research ideas to further environmental scholarship. If you're interested in doing research, need help refining a topic, or want to learn what practitioners and academics consider the most pressing and intriguing questions in their field, join us for this round table discussion!

This month's discussion leader is former Deputy Secretary of the Department of the Interior, David Hayes.

David J. Hayes is a distinguished visiting lecturer at the Stanford Law School and is serving as a Senior Fellow at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. From 2009 until July 2013, Hayes served as the Deputy Secretary of the Department of the Interior where he developed a network of Climate Science Centers and Landscape Conservation Cooperatives to evaluate and address climate change impacts on water, wildlife and coastal resources; protected U.S. and globally-important wildlife resources, including the U.S. response to the African elephant and rhinoceros poaching crisis; identified and conserved important landscapes and promoted new, landscape-level planning and mitigation approaches, from the Arctic to the American southwest, the Gulf, and the eastern seaboard; facilitated the approval of more than 13,000 megawatts of renewable energy projects on public lands; settled the long-standing Cobell Indian trust litigation; forged major Indian water rights settlements and actively addressing water conflicts in California and other western states; managed the Interior Department’s response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill; and actively oversaw and participated in key Administration management initiatives through his service on the President's Management Council.

Attendance is limited to the first 15 student to RSVP. Please contact Kori at klorick@stanford.edu for further information or to RSVP. Lunch will be provided.
