Overview

The International Law Society (ILS) promotes the study of international legal institutions as well as foreign and comparative law. We seek to foster student engagement on international, foreign, and comparative legal issues through organizing a robust speaker series, offering opportunities for students to interact with international law faculty, and promoting summer internship and career opportunities abroad. We also work closely with the Advanced Degree Students Association to cultivate relationships between law students and international students and with the SLS administration to ensure that international law remains an institutional priority.

During the 2010-11 school year, ILS organized more than thirty events and hosted talks on a wide range of topics, from the uprising in the Arab world to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Our panelists have included such diverse legal practitioners as Judge Christopher Greenwood of the ICJ, discussing the role of the Court in international conflict resolution; Justice Richard Goldstone, formerly of the South African Constitutional Court, introducing a lively debate about the UN Report on the 2008 military conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza that bears his name; and Kent Walker, General Counsel and Senior Vice President of Google, addressing the challenges of building a global Internet company.

Every year, ILS sponsors several career panels and a dinner for students to meet faculty with expertise in international law. ILS also matches incoming LLMs with JD buddies according to their respective regional and substantive areas of interests. ILS fosters these JD-LLM relationships by organizing social events for them throughout the year, including, during the 2010-2011 school year, a ski trip to Tahoe.
