Stanford International Law Society (SILS)

Overview

The Stanford International Law Society (SILS) provides a forum for students interested in international law to interact with one another and engage in constructive dialogue. In addition to offering opportunities for getting to know other students and faculty who have international interests, SILS serves as a lobby to ensure that international law continues to be a priority for the Law School administration, arranges an annual Spring Break trip to learn about another country's legal system, and organizes speaking events and discussion groups.

Recent activities have included March trips to Cuba (2001) and Brazil (2002), a mixer with foreign law students studying at Stanford, a panel discussion by renowned experts on the International Criminal Court, an information session for Stanford Law students interested in summer jobs abroad, and talks by George Soros and other professionals and academics on topics ranging from international environmental law to Australian privatization policy to developments in the Middle East. Through SILS, Stanford fields teams for the annual Jessup International Moot Court Competition, whose finals are held at the annual meeting of the American Society of International Law. SILS also cooperates with the Office of Career Services, as well as with the rapidly expanding Stanford Program in International Law, Business, and Policy, to offer career advice and placement networks, research support, and innovative courses, not to mention bringing in top-level academics and practitioners for lectures and discussions.
