"He probably could walk through any crowd in America and not be stopped," Stanford University law professor Pamela Karlan says, "unlike Clarence Thomas or the new chief, John Roberts, or Ruth Bader Ginsburg or even Justice (Antonin) Scalia."

Karlan adds, "There aren't a lot of issues where the court is going to be 5-4 and (Kennedy) won't be the fifth vote."
