Legal Challenge To Rowling
The Fair Use Project of the Center for Internet and Society is featured in a brief New York Times item about its involvement in a Harry Potter fair use lawsuit brought by Warner Bros. and J. K. Rowling:
The publisher RDR Books picked up an ally yesterday in its legal battle against J. K. Rowling for the right to publish the “Harry Potter Lexicon,” a reference guide to the Harry Potter books and films. The Fair Use Project of Stanford Law School’s Center for Internet and Society said it had signed on as co-counsel to defend RDR. Ms. Rowling sued in October to block publication of the lexicon, saying plans for the book, a print counterpart of a fan Web site (hp-lexicon.org), would interfere with her own intention to compile a Harry Potter encyclopedia.
