"Many of the qualities that are useful for advancing in a highly competitive workplace, such as assertiveness and self-confidence, are not viewed as attractive traits in women. What's `assertive' in a man is viewed as `aggressive' and `strident' in a woman,'' said Deborah Rhode, a Stanford Law School professor who writes about women and leadership.
