Professor Jeffrey Fisher is quoted by the San Jose Mercury in a story about the sentencing of a man who was convicted of back-dating stock-option grants, a violation of securities laws. Many prominent executives have written the court "more than 400 pages of letters" begging the court for leniency. Professor Jeffrey Fisher comments on how unusual it is for the court to receive so many letters:
"The usual practice is for defense lawyers to try to give the court information like that, and to solicit letters when they can," said Stanford University law Professor Jeffrey Fisher. "This number is a highly unusual number, though. The typical case, you can count the letters on your hands. This is something the court does not see very often."
