Stanford's Natural Capital project tries to quantify the value of nature to make it more attractive for farmers and landowners to leave the land in its natural state. It is an attempt to encourage conservation. Professor Thompson is quoted:
"When we mention this idea to people, it automatically grabs their attention, whether it's a company, a farmer or a policy-maker." said Barton H. Thompson Jr., director at the Woods Institute.
Barton H.Thompson Jr. says that protecting natural habitats makes economic sense for companies, farmers and policy-makers.
