Scholar Wins Right to Quote James Joyce
Forbes carried this Associated Press story on the settlement between the Estate of James Joyce and Carol Shloss, acting professor of English and Joycean scholar at Stanford University. Shloss was represented by a team from the Stanford Law School Center for Internet and Society, Cyberlaw Clinic, and Fair Use Project. The agreement enables Shloss to publish portions of material related to author James Joyce, including letters between him and his daughter Lucia Joyce. In 2003, Shloss published "Lucia Joyce: To Dance in the Wake" about Lucia's influence over her father's novel, Finnegans Wake but she had not been allowed to include important material that supports her scholarship, such as excerpts of the letters.
The AP story quotes Anthony Falzone, executive director of the Fair Use Project:
"Our client got exactly what she asked for in her complaint, and more," said Anthony Falzone, who directs the Fair Use Project at Stanford's Law School.
