Eli Sugarman
Advisor to the Rule of Law Program

Biography 

Eli Sugarman is an Advisor to the Stanford Rule of Law Program. He works closely with Professor Erik Jensen and Megan Karsh to provide strategic guidance to the Afghanistan Legal Education Project (ALEP) and Iraq Legal Education Initiative (ILEI).

Eli is the co-author of multiple texts on law and legal education in Afghanistan and co-founded ALEP in 2007. He also serves as an International Associate of the American University of Iraq -- Sulaimani. Since 2009, Eli has held the position of Senior Director of Gryphon Partners LLC, an advisory firm that counsels leading international businesses and non-profit organizations on opportunities and operations in Central Asia and the Middle East, with a focus on Afghanistan and Iraq. He previously served as a Foreign Affairs Officer at the U.S. Department of State and as a Fellow at the Stanford Center for International Conflict and Negotiation. He sits on the Boards of several non-profit organizations, including the Accountability Lab, Alliance for the Restoration of Cultural Heritage, and Volunteers in Africa. Eli earned his B.A. from Middlebury College and his J.D. from Stanford Law School.
