Jory Steele
Director, Pro Bono & Externship Programs and Lecturer in Law


Jory Steele is the Director of Pro Bono and Externship Programs at the Levin Center and is a lecturer in law, teaching the companion course to the externship program.  Prior to joining the Levin Center, Jory was both the Managing Attorney and Director of Education Equity at the ACLU of Northern California, where she engaged in litigation, policy advocacy, and legislation.  In the education context, one of her primary areas of focus was challenging discriminatory discipline and student harassment based on race, gender and sexual orientation.  Her other substantive areas of practice included affirmative action, public contracting, and gang injunctions.

Prior to working at the ACLU of Northern California, Jory was an attorney at the Legal Aid Society – Employment Law Center for almost six years, where she litigated racial and sexual discrimination cases.  She also externed for the Honorable Jack B. Weinstein in the Federal District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Jory is the recipient of a number of fellowships, including a 1999 Skadden Fellowship (with the Legal Aid Society – Employment Law Center) and a 1993 Fulbright Fellowship to South Africa, where she researched the effects of apartheid on higher education as part of a project to integrate South Africa’s higher education system at the end of apartheid.

Jory is a graduate of Columbia Law School and holds a Master's degree in International and Public Affairs from Columbia University.  She received her B.A. in International Relations from Stanford University in 1993.  She is a member of the California Bar.
