Joseph Yang is a Founding Partner of PatentEsque Law Group, LLP where he specializes in technology transactions, patent licensing and patent strategy. He previously served as VP & General Counsel of Cryptography Research, Inc. until its acquisition by Rambus Inc. in 2011. Before that, Joe was Counsel at the Skadden Arps firm, where he co-founded and later led the Intellectual Property Transactions practice in the firm's Palo Alto office.
Joe has been lead counsel on hundreds of deals involving billions of dollars in value – across the computer, electronics, semiconductor, internet, manufacturing and healthcare industries. He has also served as an arbitrator, overseen complex patent litigation, and led the development of worldwide corporate patent portfolios.
Joe's practice includes advising clients on all aspects of intellectual property, with a focus on structuring, negotiating and implementing patent sales & licensing, technology transfer, strategic alliance, joint venture, energy, and e-commerce agreements. He frequently assists companies in developing and implementing strategies for maximizing the commercial value of their patent portfolios, with a special emphasis on licensing and exploitation.
Joe is a nationally recognized speaker and authority on intellectual property law topics. He co-chairs the annual "Advanced Licensing Agreements" and "Advanced Patent Licensing" courses for the Practising Law Institute in San Francisco, New York City and Chicago, and has taught the "Patent Law and Policy" course at U.C. Berkeley (Boalt Hall) School of Law as an adjunct professor.
Joe is recognized as "One of the World's Leading IP Strategists," as well as "One of the World's Leading IP and Technology Licensing Practitioners," by Intellectual Asset Magazine. Joe is also listed in Marquis Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in the World.
Joe holds a J.D. from Stanford Law School, and a Ph.D. in engineering from the California Institute of Technology.
