This course covers a wide range of fundamental topics in civil procedure, including joinder of claims and parties, class actions and other aggregative litigation techniques, procedural problems of federalism (including choice of law, the Erie doctrine, and federal vs. state court jurisdiction), remedies, preclusion (res judicata), jury trial in civil cases, appeals and other post-verdict practice, and alternatives to adjudication. The course provides a basis for advanced work, and may be a prerequisite for certain advanced procedure courses. This course is strongly recommended for students planning a practice in civil litigation, managing or supervising litigation, or a judicial clerkship and for students planning to take litigation clinics or advanced courses involving litigation.
