Externship, Special Circumstances

Description

The Special Circumstances Externship Program (SCEP) allows second and third-year students to receive academic credit for working outside of the Bay Area in non-profit public interest, public policy, and government agencies for no more than one quarter. Standards for approval of a SCEP placement are similar to those for Directed Research proposals, but are higher. Because there is a preference for local civil and criminal placements under the Standard Externship Program, an SCEP proposal must explain both how it meets the goals of the Externship Program and why the goals can not be achieved in a Bay Area placement. All SCEP placements require a full-time work week of 40 hours.

Students who wish to participate in the SCEP must obtain the sponsorship of a faculty member who will agree to oversee their externship through review of the weekly and final reflection papers, the conduct of a site visit and the supervision of an accompanying tutorial.

For a complete description of the SCEP, and the application procedures therefor, students should read the Externship Handbook, which is available from the Levin Center for Public Service and Public Interest Law or online.

Interested students should please contact Betsy de la Vega, Director of Pro Bono and Externship Programs, Lecturer in Law.

Grading Elements used: Full participation and attendance, satisfactory evaluation by field placement supervisor, weekly reflection papers of three to five pages, and a final reflection paper of no less than 15 pages.
