The Democratization of Credit

Description

This seminar course will explore the effects of the deregulation of the consumer credit industry and the current "credit crisis". We will study several topics that are covered in a payment systems course or a consumer law course, such as credit cards, usury, predatory lending, and the Truth in Lending Act. Our focus will be on the intersection of the economic, social, and political consequences of the law's current approach to consumer credit. Readings will be drawn from primarily from books, law reviews, congressional testimony, and popular media. We will also consider the relevant statutes and empirical data. Grading will be based on class participation and a final paper.
