Abstract

But here is the sleeping giant (no pun intended) in this ongoing mess. The Mitchell Report noted that human growth hormone (HGH) was overtaking anabolic steroids as the performance enhancing drug of choice five years ago. Baseball finally agreed to test for this late last year, but only during spring training because baseball says the players would be weakened by required blood tests (already given in Olympic competition) during the regular season. Yet every time a player moves to a new team he must have a physical, including a blood test. A modest first step would be to test for all drugs at this stage and to amend the collective bargaining agreement to test for all drugs during the regular season.
