Stanford Law School will host its annual Constitution Day Lecture on Sept. 17 at 5 p.m., featuring Jack M. Balkin, Knight Professor of Constitutional Law and the First Amendment at Yale Law School. Balkin will examine how technological change affects constitutional governance, creating what he Read moreterms "constitutional rot"—the process by which a democratic republic becomes less democratic and less republican over time.
The lecture will explore how the Algorithmic Society has produced an Algorithmic State that disproportionately strengthens the executive branch, weakens Congress and limits judicial oversight. Balkin will address how large technology companies increasingly exercise governing power over communications and public debate, blurring traditional distinctions between public and private power.
